Forbes says that George Soros is worth $25.2 billion, but he regularly supports programs around the world to help people have a better life. According to the Open Society Foundation, one program that George Soros supports is stopping corruption in governments around the world.
Housing in Buenos Aires
One of the most recent projects that George has supported is the right to rent fairly in Buenos Aires. More than one million people in the country rent their housing. Unfortunately, shady real estate practices have stopped many from having access to affordable places to live. Therefore, many people end up living in informal communities where basic services are not available. As more people move to these informal communities, the rent there is increasing dramatically, so many with limited resources are becoming homeless.
The Open Society Foundation used the freedom of information law to highlight violations of brokers charging unlawful commissions. They then took their case to court proving that the government had a history of overlooking these violations. While many brokers are now finding other ways to circumvent the existing law, the Open Society Foundation is working to raise awareness about the issue across the country. They are encouraging everyone to work together to find more accessible housing for everyone.
Pharmaceutical Oversight in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan
George Soros has also been funding workers who are trying to stop corruption in pharmaceuticals in the Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. Patients in these two countries are often charged outlandish fees for medicines they receive while in the hospital. The foundation created a public database of online markets where patients can see the price paid by the government for badly needed medicine. Creating this layer of transparency has helped to stop hospitals from charging exorbitant prices for medicine making the drugs more accessible to everyone. Another program allows patients to see which medicines should be available to them for free stopping medical facilities from charging for these drugs. The Open Society Foundations’ work has also encouraged the Kyrgyzstan government to set up a process allowing it to obtain drugs at the best prices.
